BEIRUT:
Speaker Nabih Berri praised the role of Syria
in "re-establishing unity in the country and
supporting the Lebanese resistance in facing
Israel." During an interview with the
Monte Carlo
radio station before leaving the Iranian
capital, Berri stressed the importance of
Syria's achievements in Lebanon, adding that
the relations with the sisterly country were
normal.
Asked of his opinion regarding the alliance of
the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement,
General Michel Aoun, with pro-Syrian
officials, Berri said: "All the Lebanese are
close to
Syria."
As to whether he will side with loyalists or
join the opposition in the new Parliament,
Berri highlighted the necessity "to support
the government when it seeks the interests of
the country and to back the opposition in its
battle against corruption."
Concerning his relation with the Hariri family
in the wake of the assassination of former
Prime Minister Rafik Hariri, Berri gave
assurances that he will always maintain good
relations with Sidon MP Bahia Hariri and
MP-elect Saad Hariri. |
