Amine Gemayel demands fairer electoral law and national unity

BKIRKI: Former President Amine Gemayel stressed the need to create an electoral law that will fairly and equally represent all the Lebanese factions, also insisting that to overcome the challenges ahead, national unity is crucial.

Commenting on the assassination of journalist Samir Kassir, Gemayel warned against the continuation of attacks on "those who fought for the establishment of sovereignty and independence in the country" and urged the Lebanese to cooperate and promote unity in order to defend the country's sovereignty and overcome the challenges ahead.

Gemayel paid a visit to Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Butros Sfeir, with whom he discussed latest developments, in particular the parliamentary elections.

Following the meeting, Gemayel said: "The creation of an electoral law that offers a fair representation to all the Lebanese people is a necessity."

Asked about his opinion on the outcome of the elections in Beirut, Gemayel said: "It was a symbolic battle and I wasn't surprised by the results," adding that the 2000 electoral law had led to such results.

Concerning the elections in the Metn, which are set to take place June 12, the former president talked about the formation of "abnormal alliances."

He further said that he sought to reach an agreement with all political forces in Metn.

Gemayel added that he would announce his electoral list "in the next few hours."
